Greetings from the JC Chair

The Japan Studies faculty at the University of Pittsburgh is a dynamic community of scholars working in departments, such as Anthropology, East Asian Languages and Literatures, History, Religious Studies, History of Art and Architecture and Political Science in addition to professional schools, such as GSPIA. Due to generous funding from the Mitsubishi and Japan Iron and Steel Federation Endowments, the Japan Council advances the study of Japan by funding faculty and student research, symposia, and diverse cultural events held at Pitt. Further, the Asian Studies Center offers fellowships to graduate students on a competitive basis for dissertation research and conference travel. It also supports undergraduate students by helping them participate in study-abroad programs in Japan. The Japan Studies faculty furthers the dissemination of knowledge about Japan by coordinating the Japan speaker series and by sponsoring outreach programs that provide Western Pennsylvania with various opportunities, events, and resources to learn about Japan.
